QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA - These days, most television shows carry the “Parental Guidance” logo. But since it's now common, parents really need to act on it, according to apsychologist.
Recently, this Youtube video went viral, showing a little girl who was crying after a character in the ABS-CBN teleserye “Mara Clara” died.
According to psychologist Lucila Larracas, it is really inevitable to keep children away from watching television.
She says what parents can do, especially when it comes to sensitive scenes, is to watch with their children and explain that not everything they see on television is real.
“If parents are busy or at work, at least a significant adult should be around to properly guide the child,” says Larracas, who works as a juvenile psychologist at National Training School for Boys in Tanay, Rizal.
“If I were the parent, here’s what I’ll say : 'Dear, it’s just a fictional program and they are just acting. It doesn’t really mean that Mara or anyone is hurt and it doesn’t mean it will happen in real life.',” she adds.
Larracas also calls on to parents and adults to take the “parental guidance” seriously because it can influence the child’s emotion especially when violence is depicted on television.
“We sometimes tend to ignore it because it has already become common. But we should consider that these kids are not yet capable of accepting and comprehending things the way adults do.”
Larracas also calls on to television networks to avoid depicting violence on television especially during hours when most kids are still awake.
